Background
Operation IMPACT (Injured Military Pursuing Assisted Career Transition) began in May 2005 as a Northrop Grumman initiative designed to provide career transition support to military service members and their families who have been severely injured in the global war on terror. This grassroots program is run independent from the company’s normal recruitment of veterans In addition to providing support to the injured service member, if he/she is not able to work, the program offers career support to a member of the individual’s immediate family who will act as the primary wage earner.
Northrop Grumman has put together an extensive project team to:
- Identify opportunities for potential candidates;
- Assist candidates with resume development and provide coaching for interviewing;
- Meet with external organizations to describe the program and solicit candidates;
- Identify accommodations and training to help ensure the new hires success on the job; and
- Provide post-hire support.
The company has placed wounded warriors and primary wage earners across the country in a wide variety of positions, such as:
- Financial Analyst
- Technical Editor/Writer
- Program and Project Management
- Legal Administrative Assistant
- Logistics Management
- Engineering Technician
- Systems Technician
- Engineer
- Assembler
- Property Control
Operation IMPACT is seen as an industry best practice by the Department of Labor and the Department of Veterans Affairs, and Northrop Grumman has received recognition for its efforts:
Network of Champions
In 2009 Northrop Grumman established a Network of Champions—a group of more than 85 corporations and organizations interested in hiring wounded warriors. The primary purpose of this network is to provide additional resources for job placements for the candidates. In addition, to job placement, the network provides an opportunity to share best practices and collaborate on how it can support wounded warriors and their families.
If you represent a corporation, non-profit, or government agency that would like more information on how you can become a member of our Network of Champions, please email us at operationimpact@ngc.com.
